Decades have pass by, and folk music has always been here, with us and for us! It is a timeless form of art, that has been inspiring and connecting people all over the world. We have learnt, been influenced and grown with it. It is unfortunate, that most of us don’t even know that all that has happened has evolved from folk culture.
Folk music has always helped in blurring the lines between myths and reality, between conflicts and the solutions. Folk fusion has always been a mode of communication, an expression and a way for people to raise their voices.
Folk Music has been a way for people to channel their views against any form of injustice without creating violence and chaos. It has been a way of people telling their side of the story and fighting for their rights with love. People stood up against rituals like child marriage by writing songs about it and singing it in public, this even inspired some women to protest Sati in the early 1800s.
Folk music was a boon to casteism, as performances and art were that time of the day, when people of all caste and creed could sit together and enjoy. Even though the Brahmins have always belonged to the higher class, they would nurture the art and music performed by the lower classes and encourage it. It is indeed crazy how music can connect everyone despite anything else.
Folk music also comes into picture for educating people, for example sex education has traditionally been taught in Andhra Pradesh through songs. Also, when a girl has her menses for the first time, a function is organised, the elderly women in the community gather at the house with gifts, and there is no sense of shame and embarrassment. They sing songs and celebrate telling the girl about her emerging womanhood.
Folk media has been conveying important and educational messages through entertainment, , costume and music. Thus on one hand it gives expression to the lifestyle and values of the people in spoken word and songs, rhythm and presentation on the other hand acts as a most persuasive communicator and an effective corrective force.
For Folk’s sake, it is time we get into perspective and realize what we miss out on when we ignore beautiful art songs that come to us with a story, a message and a serene essence.
